Togashi Noriko is a magnificent performer and the inheritor of the artistic tradition of the Kyushu Jiuta Kawase School. She has studied with Abe Keiko, Kawase Satoko, and her mother-in-law, Inoue Michiko - whom she has performed with in a great number of concerts. Her father is Togashi Hiroshi, a shakuhachi player of the Kinko School and her husband's father is Inoue Shigemi, the head of the Kounkai association of the Kinko School. She has perfected her sankyoku technique throughout her life, which has spanned the Showa (1926-89) and Heisei (1989-) eras to the present. Her attitude toward the performing arts is very demanding; but in teaching, she happily gives all that she has to her students. Her reliable and gentle character attracts many disciples. She teaches in Hirosaki, Sendai, Niigata, Hamamatsu, Toyohashi, Nagoya and Gifu. She also helps young performers, such as those participating in the internship program sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, who request lessons from her. Recent activities which have received high acclaim include her 77th Birthday Concert at the Shogekijo (small hall) at the National Theater of Japan and the release of a five-volume CD set, 'Jiuta no Densho', distributed by the Japan Victor Foundation for the Promotion of Traditional Music. Along with Fujii Kunie, Iwata Juka, and Takizawa Ikuko; she is also an associate of the Otowa-kai association, which is devoted to the further refinement of the sankyoku gasso art. We can see the fruits of her efforts in teaching younger artists. Recently, her daughter, Togashi Taeko, and some of her disciples including Kawanishi Seiichiro and Ono Mayumi, have begun holding their own recitals. She is truly an eminent player and instructor.
