Shakuhachi

Kōhei Matsumoto began his study with Koyama Seizan, and later studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi and classical honkyoku (Yokoyama Katsuya style) under Ishikawa Toshimitsu. Matsumoto studied Nezasa-ha Kinpū-ryū classical honkyoku (Jin Nyodō style) under Jin Rei. Based in Tokyo, Matsumoto focusses on classical honkyoku, and further engages in borderless activities that are not limited to genres. In 2005, he won the Grand Prize at the Kumamoto National Japanese Music Competition. In the same year, he was invited to Italy to perform a guest concert at the Puccini Festival. In 2020, he received the Suntory Arts Foundation "Saji Keizo Award" as part of the THE KEY project. He is also committed to nurturing the next generation, and has run shakuhachi classes in Tokyo and Osaka, as well as being a shakuhachi class instructor at the Matsubara City Cultural Information Promotion Foundation and a part-time instructor at Tokyo Metropolitan University. He has taught online classes in more than 10 countries. He completed the NHK Japanese Music Skills Development Association. He is a director of the Japan Shakuhachi Performers Network (JSPN).
